We competed in five junior events, five inter events and 5 senior events.
For their first outing the juniors were superb. Evan Mitchell kicked off with a bronze medal in the hammer. Luke Harmon finished 5th in the triple jump.
Jamie O Grady earned valuable points finishing 7th in the pole vault. Johnny Bell took to the podium to collect a silver medal in the shot and followed that with a 7th place in the discus.
Our inters were very strong with a lot of experience. Eoin Sweeney placed third in the hammer. Brian Egan came close to winning picking up a silver in the discus. Tom de Jong battled tough competition to win silver in the shot. Luke Bellintani jumped into silver place with his last long jump. Barry Heneghan pole vaulted a personal best to take bronze.
Our senior team was outstanding. Thomas Arnold kicked us off with three points finishing 6th in the Triple jump. Ryan cleary competing in his fifth and final competition won a silver medal in the walk. Ed Byrne narrowly missed out on a medal finishing 4th in the discus. Eoin molloy threw superbly to finish 3rd in the Hammer. In the same event James Griffin competing in his first finals was just pipped on the final throw by 1cm to finish second.
We completed our events early so we had to sit back and watch other schools chip away at our score.
All our hard work paid off. The juniors had 19 points, inters 33 points and seniors 27 points. Each total was enough to win each team event – ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS….
Luke Harmon and Eoin Sweeney collected their winning trophies on behalf of the college.
All that was left to do was for James Griffin to collect the Senior College of Science Cup once again. A very proud moment.
Well done to all our athletes who competed throughout the year especially Ryan, James and our other 6th years.
Thanks to all the parents and helpers who came to support in Tullamore.
Finally, 50 years ago a young, yes young, Philip Conway won Gold medal in the Intermediate Boys Shot at the 1964 All Ireland Schools Final. Thanks Phil for inspiring us, motivating us and keeping our standards high.
