Belvo grind out tough win against Gonzaga
Belvedere College grinded out a tough win in Donnybrook last Friday against fellow Jesuit school Gonzaga College. The game was gripping from start to finish, with end to end action in both halves. The game was eventually settled by a late try from Belvo wing Mark Donnelly, but with referee Montayne playing overtime by nearly five minutes it was a nervous end for Belvo, who eventually ground out a well-deserved win.
The match began brightly for Belvo, with scrum half Dylan Corrigan-Forbes landing a mega penalty on 11 minutes, almost inside his own half. However, Gonzaga were quick to strike back, and number 8 Jack McVeigh toppled over from the back of a Gonzaga maul four minutes later to give the Ranelagh school a 5-3 lead.
Belvedere showed great resilience in putting together a well organised attack and they were rewarded when hooker Sam Osborne scored a try, which was converted by Corrigan-Forbes to put them 10-5 up. There was more action before the break however, as Gonzaga wing Brian O’Donnell touched down underneath the posts to give them the half time lead, 12-10.
The match was much scrappier in the second half, with a lot of rucking and mauls. Long periods came and went with no action among either sides’ back five, but eventually, the breakthrough came when Mark Donnelly picked up the ball on the right wing, danced past two Gonzaga wings and touched down right on the touchline. However, there was more action to come as the game went overtime and it was a nervous finish for Belvo. However, when the final whistle came, it was Belvo who were triumphant, and they march on to the quarter finals of the Junior Cup.
