Belvo SCT left it until the last play of the game to win the Shield semi final when Ger Young slotted a 40m penalty to win the match 18-17. Earlier the team had shot out to a 10-3 lead after a well constructed try by Young off a scrum was converted to add to an earlier penalty. Gerard’s applied a pressure game very cleverly and had built a 17-10 lead after 2 well taken tries were both converted. Damien Butler brought the scores to within 2 after grafting a try off the back of a line out maul. It was a very tight match and took until the last play when Ger Young decided matters with his long range effort.

On the second pitch, and also in Bray, the J5 (Navy) season came to a premature end after sustaining a 12-18 defeat in miserable conditions. Both teams fought hard until the end and Belvo scored 2 fine tries. Cormac Harmon, the all-action back row forward, scored a try off the back of a line out for the second time in two matches to add to a Cillian White storming effort that was also converted.

We now look forward to the weekend’s action with the annual Cooke Cup and J3 league match away to St Michaels.
